Catholic Voter’s Guide for Reno Nevada part 4

Torah relates what the qualifications of a Melech/messenger/salt/leader are to be. Deuteronomy 17:14-20. “Someone from among your kin you may set over you as Melech/messenger/salt; you may not set over you a stranger, not family. He will not have a great number of horses… Neither will he have a great number of wives… nor will he accumulate a vast amount of silver and gold.

He will not gather to himself many horses

Deuteronomy 16:18-20 states, “You will appoint judges and executives tribe by tribe. They will administer justice from the lips for the people. They will give justice from the lips of Tzadic… Tzadic/Tzadic alone will you pursue…”

Of another type of leader, the Navy, as in Barabbas, or Son of Navy, we read in Deuteronomy 18:15-17:

A Navy like me (Moses) will the Personal Name, your Mighty Judge, raise up for you from among your own kindred; that is the one to whom you shall listen. This is exactly what you requested of the Personal Name, your Mighty Judge, at Horeb on the day of the assembly…” “I will raise up for them a Navy like you from among their kin, and will put my words into the mouth of the Navy.”

You have to know how much this costs to lead us

The king must come from family. Nation and Nativity come from the root, “people born together” by common heritage, if not by birth or by blood. We are not all Jews, or Catholics, or Protestants. We are E Pluribus Unum. He must understand our wants and needs and know how many homes and cars he owns. He must know the price of a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk. They do not acquire vast sums of silver and gold, horses or wives.

Want to be our Congressman? How much does this cost?

“You will appoint judges and executives tribe by tribe.” That is from the tribe of Reno, the County tribe of Washoe, and the state tribe of Nevada. We will look for people who understand Reno, Washoe County, and Nevada with their needs.

The Hebrew word for “King” is “Melech” and is the same word for “Messenger,” an angel is a divine messenger, so is also Melech. Melech is also the Hebrew word for salt, as seasoning. Jesus tells us, “You are the Melech of the earth. If salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” We are the messengers of the earth, to season the earth.

The King is messenger/salt to the people. “Justice” in Hebrew means “From the lips.” The king is the messenger from God to the people. He brings the word of God from his very lips to the people. He is the messenger of the government to the people and messenger of the people to the people. To do the job he must come from the people.

Jesus sets leadership’s example when he is born in a stable and complains he has no place to lay his head. Matthew 8:20 He knows what it is like to be homeless. He lives among us.

Tzadic, means both “Justice” and “Charity.” The idea comes from Deuteronomy 5:1-7, “It is not to your fathers that I cut these Deborah. It is you, each of you, standing here, this day.” Remember nation of Israel, “I am God your Mighty Judge who rescued you…” To remember is to remember what it is like to have suffered in the past. That means being one of the people rescued, part of the heritage of people rescued from over there, wherever that is, to over here, America.

To satisfy the requirement of being kin, a leader must come from our heritage as related in the Declaration of Independence, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, the Gettysburg Address, and the New Colossus on the Statue of Liberty. Our ruler must relate to those who suffered in the Monongah Mine disaster of December 6, 1907, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of March 25, 1911. Part of our heritage includes the Titanic sinking which we will commemorate the centennial next year, 15 April and the Hamlet chicken fire of September 3, 1991, where 25 died and 54 were injured, trapped behind locked fire doors, as at the Triangle Shirtwaist fire. Blair Mountain is also part of our heritage as is  the Ludlow Massacre in Colorado and Joe Hill.

When we look for whom to vote, we must look for people who are like us, all of the great E Pluribus Unum, regardless of race, color, creed, or accent. Our leaders must not only relate to business owners, but he must relate to business owners. He must relate not only to common laborers, but he must relate to common laborers. Look for leaders who can do that.
